Summary: This project-based unit/lesson utilizes the engineering design process. This unit/lesson could take on more of a hybrid approach where the content, research, and planning can occur on-line and then face to face collaborative project creation of the design. The culminating activity is a hands-on project-based cardboard furniture design. Explore engineering technology tools for design planning and then utilize the maker materials and supplies to build design would enhance the project.

a. Materials follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Reviewer Notes: Normal text did not pass the WAVE contrast criteria for AA and AAA or large text for AAA. b. Material(s) are not overly resource intense that would require consistent high-speed internet access, such as large video files and multiple high-resolution photos.
Reviewer Notes: Consider a live demonstration of cutting with a X-acto tool or a video demonstration link can be placed in a Learning Management System. c. The visual design of materials is clean and coherent, lending itself to ease of learning.
Flexibility and Adaptability: 5/6 Top
d. Materials are flexible to allow students to access and complete work online or offline as needed.
e. Materials can support and/or facilitate learning in hybrid and/or online delivery methods.
Reviewer Notes: This unit/lesson could take on a hybrid approach where the content and planning can occur on-line and then face to face collaborative project creation of the design. However, the culminating activity is a hands-on project-based cardboard furniture design. Explore engineering technology tools for design planning and then utilize the maker materials and supplies to build design. f. Teacher supports, documentation, and/or guides for effective use are present.
Reviewer Notes: Build in opportunities for parent awareness and engagement. Inclusive Teaching: 6/6 Top
g. Content is presented with an objective view on topic and is free of bias.
h. Content creates student experiences that enable all children to reach empowering and rigorous learning outcomes regardless of their race or income.
Reviewer Notes: The exploration of a variety of creative design models sets the stage for understanding form and function in product design. Students research famous architects of the 21st century for design inspiration. lesson as written is appropriate for high school but could be adapted to middle school. i. Content cultivates an awareness and acceptance of a variety of ages, cultures, races, religions, and gender roles and identities.
Research-Based Strategies: 9/14 Top
j. Content builds on prior learning
Reviewer Notes: Unit/Lesson includes a peer critique and testing that provides students with constructive feedback on design creations and opportunities for improvement and redesign. k. Content leads to further learning by gradually removing supports and requiring advanced skills and concepts.
Reviewer Notes: Although the lesson plan does not layout the gradual release model explicitly, it can be used when students are exploring designs, researching architects, learning to cut and create models and learning to critique. l. Content provides for authentic learning, application of literacy skills, student-directed inquiry, analysis, evaluation and/or reflection.
Reviewer Notes: Explicit vocabulary instruction can be built in to the lessons with the discussion of design elements (form and function), architectural style, and critiquing aspects of the project. Informational text (including photographs and information on famous architects) is used to present background knowledge. m. Content engages students through discussion questions and other supports that build toward independence.
n. Uses technology and media to deepen learning and engage students.
Reviewer Notes: This unit/lesson relies mainly on informational text (photographs and text on architects) to present background knowledge. Explore additional options for technology uses such as computer product design tools, how-to videos, and ways to display product. o. Content includes options for differentiation to meet needs of all learners.
p. Instructional approaches used are reflective of best practices and research on what works in education.
Reviewer Notes: Measurement and problem solving are mentioned but specific Ohio Standards are not referenced. The National Science Foundation is referenced but not directly linked to the project. University of Dayton, Central State University and Wright State are sited for this collaborative research experience. |
